What is the exact model name of the webcam ? How does it connect to your computer ? Do you see anything in the kernel logs when you connect the webcam (dmesg) ?

How did you conclude that the web cam is not working? To view images/video from it you will need to install webcam software according to your choice and desktop.
Dear Rony, I tried my level best to function webcam .I purchased hp invent, thinking it might work in debian.Disappointed I removed debian and installed mint. No improvement.I installed camorama webcam viewer.Still no use.I got the following information.error (camorama) couldnot connect to video device (/device/video0) pelase check connection. My phone no is 25581664. I am staying at Anushaktinagar. I am waiting for your reply. wilson

Open the terminal and give the following command lsusb and copy the output to pastebin.com. Then we can find out if the webcam is supported or not. If yes, then how to make it work.

Please avoid giving personal details on a public list. It is viewed directly on the internet. As mentioned by JTD and others please do your homework instead of simply changing distros. Sometimes support for hardware has to be added manually. Have a look at this link below, read it properly, find out if the cam has the same chipset and if so, follow the installation instructions. Please read the entire doc and its links before doing anything else.

Hi all, Rony its a pretty interesting and useful document. Do you or anybody know :-
a. Which is most used chipset in the cheap webcams we have in the market
For e.g.
http://computers.shop.ebay.in/items/Web-Cams__W0QQ_catrefZ1QQ_sacatZ118391#
Although the best would be to know which are good, cheap and functional (or can be made functional with some minimal stuff on GNU/Linux) .
While the OP can't get it working, I'm looking for one which works on the same.

I don't know the answer to your question (a) (I assume the part about "looking for one which works" below, was supposed to be (b)), I have tried a very commonly available intex web cam (the one retailing for Rs. 750/- on ebay.in) and that works with gspca.
Also, for compatibility lists, look here: http://mxhaard.free.fr/spca5xx.html
(note that the page even has pointer to compatibility lists of web cams not directly supported by the gspca driver.

Actually, IMHO, the best would be to not have to bother about knowing whether something would be functional when buying.
<shameless plug begin> that was my intent when I set up tuxcompatible.com ...and also announced it in this list, tho' it did not generate the interest i thought it would, ah well ! </shameless plug end>.

At a client's residence, I tried out the Intex Laptop clip-on camera, the one with 3 LEDs on each side. The OS was Ubuntu 8.04(?) and I had to simply download a webcam viewer software to view the cam. It was detected automatically. However, if you got a laptop, the best thing is to pre-load a webcam software for your desktop (kde or gnome) and try out the cam in the shop itself.

Sorry to butt in but has anyone had any experience with a Logitech QuickCam Go. It's not mentioned on the driver compatibility page on mxhaard's page. But I was hoping that this has been used by someone and he can give some sort of deifinuitve answer. Maybe it's one of their Asia-centric brands.
thanks,
Sharukh.
