Hi,
Can someone recommend a Live CD distro meeting following specs:
- Firefox 3+ built in - less than 150MB - 200MB (quick bootup) - works on Laptop / desktop. - Supports Wifi (optional)
I tried a few distros but did not fit well.
SUSE, Fedora -- both has everything I need, but I only have the DVD version which takes a long time to boot Slax -- details on website looked just perfect, but CD did not boot, just threw some messages {I do not recollect them} and stopped. Also tried Puppy Linux & DamnSmallLinux, but faced some issues with them too. I think one of them had an old / stripped down version of Firefox
Thank you in advance.
Best regards, Sans

what is it supposed to do? I just built a machine without harddisk, monitor, atom processor, 1GB RAM booting puppy of a 4.2 GB USB stick - the sole purpose of this to connect to a digital tv for displaying websites and presentations. Only puppy did not have a out of box presentation software, so we had to make do with pdf. We are now in the process of shifting to fedora on USB.

I am not sure, but I would look for pendrive live solutions based on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS / Mint 9.
and there are some.. I am currently on centos box so cant comment deply on that at this point of time.
I also remember Narendra mentioning a deb on-demand repo or something like that sometime back in this list.

and the such
Best driver support, imho.

I am specifically looking for a CD boot and not USB boot. Its for a particular project which just requires browser & internet connection.
Hence I need a CD bootable OS and present an option to setup networking & open Firefox and start working. No other apps needed. Hence a minimalistic OS with option to setup networking & latest Firefox (mainly supporting web 2.0 websites is good enough ) Knoppix is too heavy for this need. Pls suggest. Thx Sans

Bad mobo BIOSs or in-compatible disk controller chips are a nuisance for live linux sessions. Try Sabayon Live. It has worked even on such bad evil mobos.

You can base it on the distro of your choice, I think.

As per recommendation from Rajagopal, I tried susestudio. Its awesome.
I created a new distro based on OpenSUSE 11.3 - Base system + GNOME, 32bit. Added Firefox, Adobe Flash Player and NetworkManager. All configuration were standard and created a new ISO. The ISO was 351 MB. Tested it, worked great!!
I need help on 2 issues. (1) Are there any modules (as per the above selection) which I can remove to reduce the ISO size (2) Where will I find the GUI tool which allows me to setup my network interface parameters (IP, NM, G/w & DNS). I included NetworkManager, assuming that it will help me setup my network interface. But I would not find a menu option for this anywhere.
Any help is appreciated.
Thx & regards,

I would suggest you try Ubuntu on such machines. Chances are, it would work out of box on most of them.
I have had various boot + driver problems with smaller distros (DSL / Slax etc).
What I did was, used Ubuntu and stripped off everything except basic OS + drivers + X Windows + Apps that I needed.
Final size of Live CD was about 100 MB.

Or start off from minimal and build up as you need. See http://www.ubuntu-mini-remix.org/

Thx Mehul, Shamit, RajaGopal for your inputs. Appreciate it.
But I am not a techie, I am just a linux users. I can manage my way installing, making minor changes etc. But thats about it. Beyond that, I am handicapped.
Hence I am seeking a ready project.
Thx again.

That should not be an issue, GUI tools are available through which you can:
1. Start with basic Ubuntu Live CD 2. Customize ubuntu and remove features that you do not need. 3. Prepare final Live CD Image
All it would take is a bit of trial and error to come p with an image that is small but has everything that you need.

Then build your own bootable CDROM with only the packages you need.
I suggest Thinstation http://www.thinstation.org/ There is TS-Omatic link which helps in creating your own bootable CDROM, USB image, PXE boot ...
WiFi may be tricky on Thinstation as it is targeted for wired thin clients - I have not looked at the distro for a while.
BTW, most mainstream distros have methods to re-master their default LiveCD.

Even after so many replies, the OP has not mentioned the hardware specs he will use the live cd on. His first mail mentions that most CDs he tried did not boot on his hardware. Those are light weight CDs meant to boot on any system.

Maybe your hardware is not Linux friendly for an out of the box experience.
