Hello everybody,
I'm using SuSE 8.0 Professional(courtesy "thelinuxer"/B.Ghose).
It is giving me trouble with my onboard sound. I have a Via Chipset (8233A) MoBo with AC'97 onboard sound. Linux seems to have picked this up okay (8233_ac97) but there's no sound at all. A recent reinstall (for another purpose) found the system locking up on the KDE splash screen unless sound was disabled from the BIOS. The boot-up messages show it as detected and started okay.
Would there be a difference between 8233 and 8233A sound drivers? I have the RedHat drivers with my MoBo CD.
Please advise, D Burman.

Yes. There is a difference between 8233 and 8233a chipsets.
Try compiling ALSA drivers. RedHat drivers wont work for you if the kernel version for the two distributions is different.
