Folks, I started to have this weird problem on potato r2.2. The kernal was custom compiled with minimum required things which resulted in a 450K compressed image. But I compiled the kernal a long while ago but the messages have started lately.
When I boot, sometimes just before the login prompt or sometimes even after, I get the following message a random number of times. (max number observed is under 10)
VM: do_try_to_free_pages failed for kupdate...
Then sometimes when I do shutdown I get the same message, again, a random number of times.
quasi p.s. I do not have KDE... if the kupdate means Kde...?

'do_try_to_free_pages' is a function in vm subdirectory in the kernel source. I think either you are going out of virtual memory due to some daemon. Try to removing some daemon from the startup directory and check whether it works or not.
