Probably you can start with Knoppix. Its a live CD. you don't have to install it. Try that out and once you are comfortable with that, you can install any GNU/Linux distribution on your machine.

try first, worry if you have unsolvable problems. didn't you have the same worries when you switched from no computer to a computer with windows?

A person directly starting with GNU/Linux don't have to worry but he is already _used_ Windows, thats the problem. Windows confused/spoon-feeded him so much that, now he has to worry about using a new/challenging interface.
And there is a point in his worry, is it possible for GNU/Linux to support the hardware he is using? And if it is possible, is that support available?

I think this applies to all of life. Worry _after_ you have problems, not before. Preemptive worrying causes premature aging.

Install it in a seperate partition, preferably the last logical drive space if you got good HDD space. Linux distos have dual booting so you can boot into lin or win. That way you keep your windows and practice on linux till you don't get steady.

Rony.

HI , But take care if u r a newbie and are installing Fedora core 2/3 It will make ur windows unbootable.I had faced these problems. Installing in the last logical drive can also create problem with buggy bioses. As in my computer i got to have a /boot partition in the first 6-7 gb otherwise my linux doesn't boot. SO take care of these issues .Google on the net.Read the docs before doing that..
