Hi,
My H/W vendor recommended MSI RS480/RS482 motheboard with AMD-64 for me. But I have a few doubts about its Linux compatibility. I got mixed reaction on the net.

The problem seem to be with onboard graphics Has any one of the list members tried this one?
Or would you please suggest a good Linux compatible (out of box) Mobo/CPU (< 7K)? I want a motherboard with video/sound/lan onboard.

I recently got a Gigabyte K8 Triton (VIA K8M800 chipset) + ADM Athlon 64 3000+ for a total of Rs. 8400/- Works like a charm with Xorg 7.0 and KDE 3.5.2 (linux 2.6.12, debian sid).
The only downside is that there's no direct rendering support for it in X.org yet; you'll need it if you want smooth, fast transluscency effects in X.org. Personally I haven't missed it at all ;-)

I bought an amd 64 + asus K8V-MX mobo for 7750 recently and have ubuntu 5.10 installed on it. Works like a charm. Only thing is, I use a Nvidia Graphics card and not the integrated one.
This mobo has integrated video/audio/lan etc.

Ok, this is probably a bit OT, but which is the fastest AMD processor one can get in the regular market (lamington, etc.)? I had not done a very exhaustive research when buying my box; didn't have any time (nor the inclination due to octroi) to go anywhere out of Mira Road. And the only options I got here were the Sempron 2500+ and Athlon 3000+.

AMD Dual Core 4200 or above. Processor alone costs approx 26K. Asus A8N SLI Mobo, costs approx 15K. ;)

isnt it AMD64 4800+ X2 ??
True. Dual cores are 64 bit and called X2. The more sugar you put :) the sweeter it gets. ;)

Ah, haven't visited the links, but if it's a Unichrome chip, better stay off it! I had a bad experience with it and ended up buying an nVidia card. Oh and you'll want nVidia if you want XGL working flawlessly on your system, at least at this point in time. I tell you what, you don't want to miss out on XGL!!
