hello rony, jtd mehul and all other friends. I tried to install debian from 3.1 rc 2. the problem is that I want to select 2.6 kernel and also want to get the menu for selecting the packages I want to install. the main problem is that I can either select the kernel or with debconf-priority=medium, get the menu. but I want to do both the things. I also want to make choices for packages to be installed and also have 2.6 kernel install which does not happen by default. can some one give me the proper conbination of the command line parameters to be passed? I have started the installer more than 15 times but could not figure it out. by the way if at all I think of buying the debian cds, should I buy all the 14 cd set? or else the first 4 will suit the need? I want to make one server setup and one work station setup with modest packages like office and related tools, cd writing, firefox evolution etc. mehul, I had requested you to download the debian cds for me. but it seams I have to do a setup at one of my customer this coming thursday. if any one already have the latest debian cds can I get them burned? or if some one have a faster internet connection like mtnl broad band with night time free download, I will be happy if some one could download the cds in a couple of days. else I may try getting older version from some where. thanks all. Krishnakant.

When you boot from the CDROM and get the cdrom welcome menu with `boot:' prompt, then type `linux26' to install using linux 2.6 kernel.
boot: linux26 <ENTER>
As for selecting packages, you can press ESC in debian-installer and go to the menu and locate the option for selecting individual packages for installation.

At boot prompt "expert26" will allow u to do almost everything manually which is a pain "linux26" will install linux-2.6.8-1-i386-3. Once base installation is complete u can run tasksel and select broad categories of apps or select manual package selection to select packages manually. I do a base install then apt-get remove netatalk xxx yyy zzz which removes netatalk xxx yyy zzz packages. Then apt-get install a b c which installs a b and c. Most of the time it's just cloning some installation which imeans using cp.

Select desktop this will install all the regular desktop stuff. Then apt-get install k3b dvd+rw-tools cdrdao dvdrip <other packages u need> download libdvdcss2 debs and save them someplace. dpkg -i /someplace/libdvdcss2*
Buy all 14. Particularly if u are planning a customised knoppix.

so if i do medium26 will it give me the medium level setup menu? and was it expert 26 or expert26 1 word?

can you explain more about tasksel? is it a command to be given from the prompt once the base installation is complete? and generally how do I get the menu for selecting packages? I think anurag was refering to typing linux26 at the boot prompt and then when the setup starts pressing the escape key. is it right? I will try getting 4 cds of debian from some where and then try this installation. by the way will the menu selection also instruct me which package will need wich cd? regards. Krishnakant.

http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/ this is the install guide for debian. If you are not running a server i advice you to install etch (which will be stable in dec but actully it's pretty stable compared to other distros ;) .

With etch you will get new Graphical Installer too! Etch is much more stable than many crappy distros around.

tasksel is a program run from shell once base installation is complete. if u select linux26 at the bootpromt at the beginning of install, installer will run it automagically for u after base installation.
and generally how do I get the menu for selecting packages? I think anurag was refering to typing linux26 at the boot prompt and then when the setup starts pressing the escape key. is it right?
That will give u various base install options. Not package selection after base installation. u can reconfigure the base installaion by running base-config.
I will try getting 4 cds of debian from some where and then try this installation. by the way will the menu selection also instruct me which package will need wich cd?
Yes it will. U can also use dselect or aptitude for an ncurses based package selection. Or kpackage manager or synaptic for a gui package installer. U can use alien to install rpms on a debian system or to convert rpms to debs.WARNING make sure that dependencies are met. U can occasionally mangle your system. The above are sort of parsers for dpkg, which is the supreme core which will allow u to mangle your debian system in whatever way u please.
hi jtd, thanks for your help, but I am still confused.
one word expert26
so if I type medium26, will that work?
tasksel is a program run from shell once base installation is complete. if u select linux26 at the bootpromt at the beginning of install, installer will run it automagically for u after base installation.
so what will it actually show me? will it give me the list of softwares from which I can choose? if that's exactly what it is going to do, then just typing linux26 will be sufficient for me. actually package selection is my main requirement when I will install debian. and is the gcc compiler, libc6 and other development tools like python the part of base install or do I need to select it from tasksel. further I am also confused as to when exactly will I be able to know weather a certain package is present on a certain cd. I am asking all this in advance so that I know which cds to be kept handi. thanks again. Krishnakant.

Yes. linux26 is all u need. after base install the installer will run tasksel automatically. This will popup the "debian package selection" screen. Here u select any cobo of options, including manual package selection.
actually package selection is my main requirement when I will install debian. and is the gcc compiler, libc6 and other development tools like python the part of base install or do I need to select it from tasksel.
From tasksel.
further I am also confused as to when exactly will I be able to know weather a certain package is present on a certain cd.
Taslsel will tell u "please install debain xxyyzz cd1 and press enter"

Yes it will. U can also use dselect or aptitude for an ncurses based package selection.
I would suggest apt-get rather than aptitude. aptitude installs recommended packages also where as apt-get installs only dependencies. So you might end up with lot of packages which you may not actually need.
Or kpackage manager or synaptic for a gui package
installer. U can use alien to install rpms on a debian system or to convert rpms to debs.WARNING make sure that dependencies are met. U can occasionally mangle your system.
# apt-get -f install
if you mangle your system. A really helpful command when you are in trouble.

Hi,
First of all, Learn to use thing called - paragraph! and key - 'enter'
1. You can select kernel 2.6 by entering linux26. Debconf will ask you to set the priority low, medium or high. You can also set it later by,
#dpkg-reconfigure debconf
2. First 3 CDs are enough for normal server setup. I have some Debian DVDs are lying with me, but it is of 3.1 (not rc2). You can contact me offline for that.

I can't promise about downloading the CD's on time cos my internet connection is not working fine. I have been having a lot of down time recently. I am downloading Oralux for now which you asked for. Also, I am facing lack of hard disk space. If you still don't get anyone to download it, I will start downloading it tonight. But, I will require blank CD's from you as I am out of blank CD's. I have a older version of Debian, all 14 CD's which I can give it to you tomorrow along with oralux.
