Sorry, openerp / tinyerp does not come up as anternate to tally. Tally is a simple accounting software not constrained by erp norms like data authenticity, audit trails, interlocking controls and even data integrety. Openerp is a much more complex software and not a substitute for tally.
In the normal sense, an erp is mot an accounting software. Its much more. And due to that it can't take place of accounting software. It will only work where the users WANT something much more than accounting.

Since I am not from financial background and never used Tally, I didnt find a proper answer. Through Search Engine I did come across GnuCash, but dont know how it compares to Tally.
it does not
Has anyone used it, so that I can lay out points on transitioning from Tally to GnuCash or any other OpenSource/Free Alternative to Tally.
check the archives of this group for openERP/tinyERP

just like linux is not a substitute for windows - it is far far more.

surely users can use the accounting part (which would be a subset of the ERP whole)?

No sorry, was - sorry to disappoint you but your analysis seems wrong. as for top posting, when i am using my mobile for emails, top posting is the only answer. The interleaved posting comes wrong and the reader does not know what i said as compared to what the OP said.

No it does not work that way. ERP makes accounting a pain for those used to tally / simply accounting / peach tree type of software They dont want to be pinned down or constrainted by the requirements that the erp puts on them
