RTFM.
man (8) mii-tool shows:
SIOCGMIIPHY on 'eth?' failed: Operation not supported The interface in question does not support MII queries. Most likely, it does not have MII tranceivers, at all.

thanks, I will try it out. Just for the benefit of others, after some googling I found out about "ethtool" which too might be useful in such circumstances. Shourya

Which linux flavour do you use? I am using Suse 9.1 and the man page of mii-tool on it did not have any information on the specific error. Anyways, thanks for your reply.

Debian. You're right though, I just checked the mii-tool man page on an old RH 7.3 box I have at work, and it too does not show the diagnostics. Guess that is why everyone ought to be using Debian! :)

46 lines of irrelevant quoting for a 3 line reply. And this is among the better messages. I think I have grown too old for this hip hop list. I think I will follow the other out of here.
I'd be extremely obliged if some kind soul drops me an email for the LUG meet announcements. We still meet some nice folks out there.
