When did THAT happen? Firebird is the Borland Interbase database, one version of which was GPLed.

Sorry. It's not renamed. But i distinctly remember that it was to be renamed for the 8.xx series and a spat about some other project with a similiar name. And 8.xx was to include a lot of the borland codebase as per an interview with the developers.
