I have a MTNL land line and TriBand DSL on the same copper pair. Since 14.00 hours today no dialtone on the telephone thus cannot make any outgoing calls but DSL is working. On the flip side call my land line number from my mobile and I get audible indicating that the exchange does not think there is any problem with my line. This happened to my line last year during the 26/July downpour but auto corrected a few days later but voice quality was poor. Complained to MTNL and they replaced the splitter subsequently restoring acceptable voice quality.
So ... to eliminate the possibility of a damaged splitter, I disconnected everything and hooked up the phone instrument directly to the pair coming in from MTNL - no dial tone. Anybody experienced this before? Any suggestion what/where the problem could be? In the mean while will lodge a complaint with MTNL as well.

What does get audible stand for? You could be getting a ringing tone in your calling unit and no ringer signal on your phone or it even rings in your instrument. If it rings in your instrument, does it allow you to make a conversation? Do you get full speed in your downloads?

I remember, you have wired all your phones through the single splitter. That could be a heavy load on your splitter's series coils. I use two splitters in seperate channels to distribute the load. However if you have isolated everything and still there is no dial tone even if only one instrument is connected then its a line problem. Did you cross check your instrument on a working line?

In Telco speak "audible" means the "calling" party gets a "normal" ringing tone while the exchange(s) in the network are routing the call to the "called" party. If there is any line error on the terminating end, then the network is so informed and the call is routed to a different tone or an announcement. Re: DSL speed I am getting ~230Kbps.

The splitter should be able to handle 2 phone units in parallel but as I said in my OP no dial tone when the phone is connected to MTNL pair directly.

I used 2 different phone instruments - no dial tone in either.

Your line has gone kaput. Today my friend called me up to tell me that both his tel. lines are dead and so is his triband on one of them. I have an FWP as a wireless emergency net backup. Also helps in making outgoing calls at local rates.
