Greetings,
The list seems to be back to life. Thanks to all for help. I am sorry I could not attend the last meet.
Few improvements/contributions I noticed which have not been highlighted are as follows, 1. We have scheduled meets for coming 2 months, with many more GLUG members helping in co-ordinating the meets, I am sure we are doing a much better job now. 2. The website has been updated with the latest information. Thanks to website maintainers for the same. 3. Thanks to the TIFR team to provide us with the IT infrastructure for making all this possible.
Please suggest any more activities that we can do on the list.
Few inputs from my side are : 1. I would like if we can 2-3 trial meetings during working days, there have been many requests for the same. (Probably the Oct meet??). We can check if there is enough enthusiasm for the same and decide if we should continue with it.
2. We should have a gift certificate from GLUG-BOM given to speakers for giving a presentation at the meets.
3. Trevor wanted to have a CD library, I also feel the need to have a GNU/Linux distribution channel.
4. A method to collect some money for the activities, domain registration, stationary charges for certificates, etc.
This mail is just a thought. Please feel free to put your own ideas and comments. Flames > /dev/null 2>&1.

Mumbai is a massive city and if a tiny state like Goa can hold two LUG meets (at different venues) in a month, we should be able to hold 10! People in Borivali may not be able to travel to Chembur and vice versa, but with 14 million people (larger than the population of the entire country of Hungary!) Mumbai can accomodate a lot more meetings. In fact, Thane and Nav Mumbai are seperate cities in themselves.
Why not a LUG Borivali/Western Suburbs, one for Harbour Line etc etc? I think there is a compelling case for being polygamous here :-)

Well said. In fact I am planning to start a group in Thane. Presently alone but I will start, thats for sure.
Anybody from Thane & neighbouring areas care to join/discuss this ?

Regarding formation of more GLUGs in Mumbai is welcome. But keep in mind not to split the mailing list. It is very difficult to get an optimum number of experts so that each mailing list can manage on its own. I dont think at this moment such a situation exists. Also it is also not true that the existing mailing list is too big and we have so many members that it needs splitting. To sum up; have more local meetings, workshops and events, in fact even at college level, but let the list remain as it is.

I second this view. To participate in a mailing list, and to meet together in person are two different things.
Apart from a false sense of identity, a separate list would not necessarily have the critical mass that would help sustain that list. If you look around, experienced persons are actually members of a number of LUGs. Take our own LUG, where we hav members from outside Mumbai as well.
If some of the list members would like to meet in Thane or Borivali, we should. However, one must not then peevishly adopt separatist policies while continuing to remain in the same list. E.g. "Hey, the xyz area's LUG does this, so you now know what you're missing..." Such a stand would only serve to alienate folks who are still learning the ropes of online culture. And the collaborative culture that we've all benifitted from would not then exist.
Thinking about this a bit more, I think the only occassion for one to form a separate mailing list would be when existing long timers harass certain members. I don't see any such harassment taking place on the linuxers list at least.
I'm therefore +1 to Dr. Nagarjuna's request to not split the mailing list.
