I remember M$ touting a new file system called CIFS. I wonder what happened to that... This time they're playing the WinFS horn in their new OS codenamed Longhorn.
WinFS is supposed to be M$'s new file system that will make searches faster by maintaining multiple indexes. Also, it also has a built-in RDBMS engine for tracking files...

Errr ... I thought SMB (and also SaMBa) are implementations of the CIFS specification? Some high-end Unices also ship with a licensed implementation of CIFS as well ... that's the same specification that was in focus some time ago because Microsoft put a "virus-like" license on it to hinder the Samba community.
Sameer.
