Perhaps you need to ask them about their freeway plan. 256 kbps down, 64 kbps up, no download caps.

Thanks to Rony, I have finally cancelled my internet only dialup from MTNL. But now this means i dont have a backup system. hathway seems to be either out of business or too busy. And the rates on their sites are very high so i suspect they have not updated their site. anyone has hathway numbers? No one is picking up the number on the site.
Already have tataindicom so want a different ISP as backup.

My personal exp. Hathway sucks. Bad speed, bad support, bad presales everything bad. Vai

Actually all isp's are birds of the same feather no matter who you go with the service and support sucks... Do check your isp as to the speed the provide (yes that is primary importance) but also see how long they take for a installation and how quick they are to respond when your line goes down...
I've tried with iquara, powersurfer, mtnl, exatt they all suck big time (ps. This is my personal experience)

I am leaning more and more towards tri-band, given that I would be needing it only as a backup. I am sure with time, they would improve their service. On the other hand since my previous backup was dialup, no reason why i cannot use regular dialup in times of contingencies. hmmm..

Define speed. Personally, I would like 100 Mbit/s symmetric locally, and 10Mbit/sec to the Internet with no download caps at a reasonable price with business grade connectivity uptimes expected (two 9s, and yes my budget is > 1000 INR for that).
Do you want low latency or high throughput or both? Each has a different pricing.

No. the above is also true. budget was GREATER Than 1000 INR for that. no shit sherlock! :)
I really do not understand why they have this download limit. Even in 1999 when broadband was just being introduced in the US the speeds were 1 MBPS plus and no limits and all for equivalent of 2000/month.
Tataindicom currently has no router based plans available. They are out of IPs or some switches that can accomodate those. I couldnt really follow the explaination of the sales person.
A neighbor has hathway: And cannot get hotmail to open up. Does anyone else have the same problem?

Lack of competition creates these monopolies in India. The Govt. too is sitting on bandwidth and making it look expensive.
Instead of using foreign cable connections to visit sites located outside India everytime a user clicks on a url, can some big companies or organisations get together to create a very high volume of web space in India and mirror most of the world websites with updates every day or more frequently through the existing undersea cable links, leaving the users to surf locally on the mirrored pages. That would reduce the load on these cable links.

Rony.

That is already happening. Akamai (http://www.akamai.com) does provide caching (this is different from mirroring but helps the same purpose of accelarating websites for end-users). However, the onus to provide fast access like on the companies themselves by entering into contract agreements with akamai.

Wont work. It will cost too much. Besides, is anybody except us complaining regarding international bandwidth? What about Sweden, Japan and such nations? Do they have their own cache of the internet? =P Why dont we just try developing our bandwidth? More undersea cables? or MAYBE JUST MAYBE these bandwidth-hording-scum of ISPs release their HUGE store of bandwidth for the common people? Flag Telecom and Tyco's bandwidth is HUGE. Unimaginably HUGE....

You do realise that Sweden and Norway get 100 Mbit/s symmetric to the Internet for ~ INR 4000? You do realise that it would be even cheaper in terms of running costs to wire up Mumbai once properly and run it right? (< 10000 INR for a single ethernet cable connected to a managed switch running to a flat, < 1000 INR/mth to run, including expensive marketing costs).

My own experience with the Hathway's Freeway 256 kbps plan has been really good. I get speeds close to 256 kbps consistently though I don't think i get full 256 kbps. Initally when I used the 64kbps shared plan the service really sucked. But, since I upgraded to Freeway I have really got a good service. Only had a downtime of 1 day in the 3 months i've used it. Though I would recommend you to get more opinions from other users of this plan. My personal experience with this has been really good. I pay Rs. 1000 p.m. for the service + Rs. 100 p.m. for modem rent(modem can also be bought outright for 3k) + Rs. 100 approx as 10.2% service tax.

With airtel in town, they better get their act together. I have been with powersurfer for 2 months now and their service is OK. Customer support is quick. They are still stupids. Too stupid to tell me that 64Kbps = 6KBps. They do lie at times. But pulling a few strings here and there get things done quickly. I guess their staff needs a kick in the a$$ once in a while. But they are pretty much ok. No port blocks. No hassles. But they did have a huge amount of down time last month. It got me really worried but for a while now everything is going smooth ( touch wood =P ).
I called up Airtel and they are laying their cables in my area. So i guess I will be shifting to Airtel 699 plan soon (in a month or two i guess). Specs are supposed to be 128Kbps, Unlimited downloads, No port caps, DSL technology (dunno if its SDSL or ADSL). They also have the Home 999 plan which has the same specs except speeds are 256Kbps.
