Hello,
Just like the dozens of forwarded mails that warn us of the so called 'dangers' in many things, products, places etc, I received a mail warning the reader about keyboard security. I brushed it off but went on google to check it out. It is no. 11 and goes like this....
"11. Beware of New FRAUD strategies - Keyboard PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHENEVER YOU'RE USING A PC AT A PUBLIC PLACE (Like INTERNET CAFES..ETC).CHECK THE BACK OF THE PC AND SEE IF THE BELOW DEVICE IS THERE..IF SO..DO NOT USE IT!!!!"
http://infosecawareness.in/security-tips
I would not take this seriously but it is from the site of CDAC, so is there any truth in this or the site itself is some fraud using CDAC's name?

You don't need any hardware. There are software based keystroke loggers - no physical clue to the end user. Scary is it not?
On Linux there is LKL @ http://sourceforge.net/projects/lkl/ <quote> LKL is a userspace keylogger that runs under Linux on the x86 arch. LKL sniffs and logs everything that passes through the hardware keyboard port (0x60). It translates keycodes to ASCII with a keymap file. </quote>
Similar software available on Windows platform as well.

Nothing scary. Not for those who have spent a long time with the doze system. :-)
What I want to know is whether this device is real or is the message a hoax? Since the website belongs to CDAC, I was not sure.

Sigh.
Every time you post trim out ALL portions not directly relevant to your mail. Dont top post either.
Your mail was 10% signal and 90 % noise, reproduced in 700 harddisks.
Your mail should have been
"SEE IF THE BELOW DEVICE IS THERE"
Couldn't understand this. What does it mean?
BTW the net is full of idiotic pseudo science & technology articles and mails, scare mongering about cancer, doomsday, aids, saboodana, excercise, god, ganpatis drinking milk, devil and assorted rubbish. Just tell your friends to stop posting such crap to you.
Whenever I feels like arguing with someone and it might result in trailing, I shut up!

Oh. Glad to know that you read only my posts, because, otherwise, you would have found much better examples in this ML to highlight your concern at. ;)

Well I felt the rest of the mail was not out-of-context and hence let it be, while I highlighted the most important line at the top.
BTW the net is full of idiotic pseudo science & technology articles and mails, scare mongering about cancer, doomsday, aids, saboodana, excercise, god, ganpatis drinking milk, devil and assorted rubbish. Just tell your friends to stop posting such crap to you.
'your' friends? I believe the mail was posted on the mailing list of which we both are subscribers.
Regarding the topic, I wouldn't comment on its relevance as there have been too many other mails which could be classified as 'OT' (isn't that a pseudonym for 'crap'?)
Cheers!

The message was recieved by me and I was curious as the information on the web about the suspect device was on a CDAC website.
