Hello All,
Suse 10 from LFY was tried out. Overall, it is a little disappointing considering that SuSe is generally recommended for desktop usage. This was my first trial of the SuSe distro for a desktop.
During installation, its manual partition utility could not detect free unpartitioned space in my hdd and I had to reboot into FC4, my current OS to create a new partition in the free space using fdisk. Then this partition was selected in the SuSe installer.
Device detection was good with sound and graphics working fine. However it could not mount CDs in my DVD ROM as well as CD R/W so media players could not be tested. A very big problem.
Another important facility that is lacking is a proper gui dialup tool like kppp in kde or anything else in gnome. There was a novell dialup tool found after a lot of hunting in the packages selection list but that does not work even in root login.
Otherwise, for ethernet usage this distro appears to have a lot of stuff packed in and its packages selection list in the dvd looks pretty impressive.
FC4 may not be very impressive but at lest it gets its basic stuff working pretty well.
Regards,
Rony.

Suse is popular for its KDE. I have hardly seen anyone use Gnome on suse. If you use KDE, you will realize that Yast gives you all the latest packages to choose from. Having used Suse 9.3 for over a year, I must tell you, I never installed Gnome on Suse, and so never used it! All I can tell you that Suse is the best desktop distro out there and definitely worth buying. AFA Opensuse 10 is concerned, I havent used it yet, but definitely looking forward to in the near future. -- Regards, Sanket Medhi, sanketmedhi [at] gmail [dot] com

Novell is moving from KDE to Gnome as the default desktop. This is partly due to the the acquisition of Ximian which was built on GTK libraries. The future version of OpenSuse will use Gnome as the default desktop. I think OpenSuse 10 has gnome as default but I am not sure.

Maybe Novell will be doing so in near future but as of Opensuse 10.0 GNOME doesn't seem to be a part of SUSe like KDE does. It feels like GNOME has been thrown in at the last minute for the GNOME lovers. And it doesn't have and default desktop. It asks you which desktop you want to set up as ur default while installing - KDE, GNOME and Other are the choices you get.

Its available in this month's LFY. I wonder if the mags try out these distros before they pack them in dvds. If they did so then it would save the readers unnecessary waste of time.

Yes it is. I never subscribe to computer mags. as most of them keep rotating software and everytime it may not be usefull. I do wonder if there is any connection between digit and chip.

I too got suse 10.0 OSS from LFY this month and installed it.
During installation, its manual partition utility could not detect free unpartitioned space in my hdd and I had to reboot into FC4, my current OS to create a new partition in the free space using fdisk. Then this partition was selected in the SuSe installer.
Even I had the same problem that suse didn't detect my free space and asked to overwrite my slackware partition. But, then I used advanced partitioning option and selected new partitions to be made manually.
Device detection was good with sound and graphics working fine.
It did detect everything perfectly for me except it exceeded my monitor's refresh rate.
However it could not mount CDs in my DVD ROM as well as CD R/W so media players could not be tested. A

Hello u seemed to have overlooked kpp does exist. You can find it in applications->internet->dial up->kppp. Though I haven't tried it out as I don't need it.
Otherwise, for ethernet usage this distro appears to have a lot of stuff packed in and its packages selection list in the dvd looks pretty impressive. FC4 may not be very impressive but at lest it gets its basic stuff working pretty well.
Its got a large no. of softwares and a great variety too for all kinds of users. I was really impressed by it. For me its the first linux distro that almost worked out of the box. Except for the monitor refresh rate problem I've had no problem whatsoever.

Hi Mehul,
As per your experience, I did a clean re-install of SuSe 10 and this time the kde was selected with other additional programs. It was pretty impressive. The games are nice too.
There is no kppp in SuSe10. Instead, they have 'kinternet'. That does not open at all. It keeps throwing errors even in root login. However there is wvdial and I simply copied my fc4 script into suse and it connects to the net along with sites opening properly.
It mounts my usb pendrive beautifully. The only problem that still persists is that of cds not mounting. It only mounts the suse dvd.
I am posting my fstab. Please check yours for comparison.

An update. After changing the file system in fstb to auto for the cd drives, they mount the cds and I can read data.

You could have enabled "subfs" support in your system, I read somewhere that SuSE's kernel uses this submount thing to automount drives

You could have problems with submount. I've used it on SuSE and Gentoo before. A better option would be to use ivman to mount things through the use of hal and dbus. It works like a charm!
I don't know about other distros, but this article helped me set it up properly... Just replace the "emerge" steps with your own distro's package installation methods.
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_ivman
I was also disappointed with Suse. I personally think that any *Desktop* distro must come with lots of audio and video codecs. FC4 has the same problems as also Ubuntu I think.
If codecs and stuff is your issue, go Gentoo! Has everything you'll ever need!

snip Hi roni Good to hear that everything else went properly. But, I do find kppp in my Suse menu. Under internet->dial up, i got two entries kinternet as well as kppp. Just try to check it out by menu updating tool. Or maybe its not been installed then just check it out in the dvd. Cos I'm sure Suse has bundled kppp. About your errors, I can't help you out as I've never used dial up under linux.

In the dvd during setup, I checked through the entire kde list last time as well as during re-install and could not locate kppp. Are you using the CD provided by LFY?

Hmmm, that's funny. I'm really confused about how is this happening. Yeah I used the DVD I got from LFY. Well I'm checking out the DVD to see if I can locate where kppp is present in the DVD. BTW, did you try using Run-> kppp? Now, for my problem. It seems very strange one. I am trying to download FreeBSD. It just frequently disconnects. I tried using different mirrors but in vain. My downloads just stop midway and never reconnect. I'm using kget to download them. Now, for the main headache. Atlast I did get FreeBSD 6.0 bootonly file to download. But, to my horror the file's just disappeared after the download. Here's my log file of kget for bootonly iso: 14:14:15 : Copy file from: ftp://ftp2.au.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/i386/ISO-IMAGES/6.0/6.0-RELEASE-i386-bootonly.iso 14:14:15 : To: file:///home/mehul/KMLDonkey/6.0-RELEASE-i386-bootonly.iso 14:14:15 : Attempt number 1 14:14:15 : Opening connection to host ftp2.au.freebsd.org 14:14:26 : Connected to host ftp2.au.freebsd.org 14:14:26 : Sending login information 14:14:27 : Login OK 14:18:18 : Total size is 45936640 bytes 17:14:52 : Download finished But, when I checked the directory no such file existed. This happened twice once as as normal user and other as root. This has got me really frustrated. I tried using KBear(ftp client) but it crashes every so often and is rarely able to log into FreeBSD site though it logs into other ftp sites properly. I tried using KTorrent. But, its just too slow. After 3 days only 5% has been downloaded though the tracker seems OK. But, the speed just keeps on fluctuating all the time. And yeah I have 256 kbps Hathway connection. Plus, I've changed the default port of ktorrent as well as UDP tracker port. But, in vain.

Does the SuSE 10 DVD that comes with LFY include x86_64 version as well? If it does, I may buy LFY. If it doesn't... hmmm netinstall! Downloading nearly 4 GB is a pain! Takes 3 days!!

I just glanced through kget's settings in SuSe and it has a retry option of certain times. You must have passed that number of retrys. Just guessing. Does it resume after a manual reconnect? I am just comparing my usage of 'fresh download' that I use, but it is in the other unmentionable OS. It has 8 retrys and then stops. However it can be reconnected for a new session and again it has 8 retrys. Is hathway having some setting to block massive downloads or a time limit for a single connection to a server?
Regards,
Rony.

Thanks roni But look at the log closely. It states that the file was completely downloaded. Also, I've changed max. tries to 25. And am sure it hasn't used up that much cos that was only as 40 sumthing mb file whereas other files - FreeBSD cd1 and cd2 have downloaded around 50mb each and have only used up 3 tries each. About hathway massive download blocker, I don't think so cos when I had windows I used to download lotsa files using BitComet. BitComet worked really well for me alas it isn't available for linux. And what's so unmentionable about windows?

Buddy, have you ever considered using wget? Use the following command if hathway is causing your connection to stall / timeout:
wget -c --tries=0 --timeout=30 ftp://foo.com/foo.iso
It will try indefinitely and everytime your connection drops or stalls, it will wait 30s before retrying.
If you still have problems then try using rsync. It's supported on most servers. And have you considered a command line bittorrent client? If you can download through bittorrent then why not download the bittorrent client for GNU/Linux and give it a go??
Regards.

Thanks dinesh I really forgot about wget. Will surely try out these methods. As far as bittorrent is considered. I'm using ktorrent that comes with suse and for slackware I'm using azureus but I'm dissatisfied with both as I haven't seen speeds like I saw in BitComet even for the same torrents. Can someone suggest me another good bittorrent client available for linux and preferrably similar to bitcomet. Thanks

Use bittorrent. Its a python client, I think. It gives great speeds and its command line. So you can just put it to download in a screen. Kill X and relax ;) Azurues gives terrible download speeds. Dunno why. Dunno about ktorrent. never used it. Also, try setting the ports to 40000+...

I did download bittorrent. But, its not installing. I read the install file with it and as per the file. I tried installing it but got following error:- linux:/home/mehul/KMLDonkey/Xilisoft/BitTorrent-4.1.7 # python setup.py python: can't open file 'language_codes.py': [Errno 2] No such file or directory ./makei18n.sh: line 20: xgettext: command not found ./makei18n.sh: line 32: msguniq: command not found usage: setup.py [global_opts] cmd1 [cmd1_opts] [cmd2 [cmd2_opts] ...] or: setup.py --help [cmd1 cmd2 ...] or: setup.py --help-commands or: setup.py cmd --help

I also tried changing port of ktorrent client to 40000+ and it seemed to work all of a sudden the torrent came to life. Though its not runing now. I'll leave it on later and see the results.

May be Hathway is blocking the protocol by using packeteer or something similar. This sucks big time. But I think you mentioned that it works in windows. So it should work in Linux too. BTW I dunno about installing bittorrent. I have it on my debian router and to install it, i just had to issue: apt-get install bittorrent. Which distro are you using? Dont you have an automated tool that can install it?? (or atleast find out the dependencies?)

Hmmm I haven't run ktorrent yet but tried out wget ad it seems to be going fine and i'm getting good speeds now. Well I can't seem to find Suse rpm for bittorrent. I do remember I had bittorrent in FC3 before. But, can't recall I got it by rpm or .tar.gz format. But, that used to work. Which is the automated tool that can do it for suse? Does kpackage do it. Sorry for not doing much research as i got exams coming up this week and can't spend too much time.

Hmm ya i've installed bittorrent python client and bittornado. I am finding bittornado better to use. Though its not giving me upto the speeds its giving (i've 256kbps connection) me lot better rate than azureus. I get speeds upto 10-12 sometimes in 1 downlaod. Am downloading about 6 torrents at the moment. So, I guess if I keep only one open then I might get those speeds. BTW, can anyone tell me is it better to download 1 file at a time cos that can give you higher speeds but I feel its better to download more that 1 at a time cos if torrents go slower than your available bandwidth than you can use extra bandwidth for the other one. Am I right there or is 1 at a time better?

My fave bittorrent client is Azureus, not only coz it looks cool and gives good speed but also it gives you excellent info about you downloads/uploads. For eg. the swarm view of your downloads. Its definitely worth a try! I am just suggesting this in case you want to try a GUI client, or else command line always rocks. :D

Hi sanket. My problem has been that azureus isn't giving me good speeds + it hogs up my 256 mb of RAM. I am using it at present but I wanna give others a try cos of this problem. I'd like to use GUI client better but at the present best I got is GUI BitTornado. It opens up separate windows for each torrent. But, atleast it's giving me better speeds than azureus. Dunno what's the matter with my machine. All others seem to be getting around 20-22 kbps on their 256 kbps connection but most i seem to get from bittorrent is 15-16 kbps

Azureus is a big memory eater! Plus its Java based, which I hate. But I still use Azureus, because I have ample RAM available and it does have some good features. Recently, I found ktorrent. I just installed it on my Gentoo yesterday, haven't used it yet though. It has some of the features Azureus provides. You might want to give it a try.
As for Azureus, it wastes a lot of bandwidth with the distributed tracking and stuff... I find 20-30 MB extra downloaded by Azureus for its "protocol"! Maybe that's one reason it doesn't give you the full speed.

I got ktorrent in suse. It crashes like every half hour. So, I think I'd better keep off it. I really loved BitComet under windows dunno if something on similar lines can be available in linux.

Hey no I didn't even remember that. I will do so the next time I log into Suse. Thanks for reminding me.
One query...does bitcomet (text mode) handle several torrent downloads in one process or as different ones? -- Regards, Sanket Medhi.

hey how to report my ktorrents bug crash? I tried using bug reporting tool with SUSE but it doesn't allow me to send bug report for ktorrents among the crash applications. I saved the crash log in a file. So how do I report it now? I've done it before so I got no clue.

Well, I don't know about SuSE. OpenSuSE does have a bugzilla. If your ktorrent came with the distribution itself, you can probably report the bug there. Otherwise, you can report the bug to the author of the software.

I'm talking about OpenSuse. Ktorrents came with opensuse. I tried using bugzilla only but it didn't allow me to send bug report for ktorrent. I will try to report it to the author. Than you.

ktorrent is part of KDE; I don't think SuSE or any other distro fixes bugs in the bundled apps.
Report the bug directly @ bugs.kde.org.

Hello All,
Suse 10 from LFY was tried out. Overall, it is a little disappointing considering that SuSe is generally recommended for desktop usage. This was my first trial of the SuSe distro for a desktop.

FC4 may not be very impressive but at lest it gets its basic stuff working pretty well.
I was also disappointed with Suse. I personally think that any *Desktop* distro must come with lots of audio and video codecs. FC4 has the same problems as also Ubuntu I think.
Currently the distro for home use that I am recommending is SimplyMEPIS. It comes with most of the codecs, directly compatible with the Deb repository's and it somehow gets the desktop look and feel just *right*. It also comes with all the packages needed for home use.

I have used Suse and FC4 for long durations. Currently, I am using Ubuntu 5.10 and I have no problems playing audio/video at all! The reason why most plugins dont come preinstalled is because most of these plugins are proprietary. But you can always install them using your package manager. For example, to play audio files, simply install gstreamer-plugins in Ubuntu using apt-get or Synaptic and it will install all available audio codecs available. Same for video with xinelibs. Once I mark these two packages for download, Synaptic downloads all codecs/plugins necessary to play any type of audio/video files (except windows media, ofcourse). -- Regards, Sanket Medhi, sanketmedhi [at] gmail [dot] com

Just wanted to verify something : is this SUSE 10 or SUSE 10 OSS version. OSS version doesnot have any commercial packages. A quick check can be is there Acrobat Reader or Real Player included?
Also several packages are in violation of any patent or copyright are generally not included.
Another thing Opensuse is open for filing bugs . I strongly suggest looking up the bugzilla and filling new ones so that it doesnot get overlook in 10.1

Another important facility that is lacking is a proper gui dialup tool like kppp in kde or anything else in gnome. There was a novell dialup
GNOME has gnome-ppp dialer tool.
