Hi,
Some people may recall that I had posted the problem of Gmail not working with thunderbird on this list. It turns out that the problem is neither Gmail nor thunderbird. It's MTNL!!
Usually, whenever I used to ping some site, output was something like:
############################################ [/home/soumen] $ ping yahoo.com PING yahoo.com (66.94.234.13) 56(84) bytes of data. From 203.94.230.117 icmp_seq=0 Packet filtered From 203.94.230.117 icmp_seq=1 Packet filtered From 203.94.230.117 icmp_seq=2 Packet filtered From 203.94.230.117 icmp_seq=3 Packet filtered
--- yahoo.com ping statistics --- 4 packets transmitted, 0 received, +4 errors, 100% packet loss, time 3039ms , pipe 2 [/home/soumen] $ ############################################
Yesterday to my surprise I could actually ping to various sites without the packets getting filtered (I did'nt capture the screen shot but the "Packet filtered" part was gone & I got some "ttl" & "time" values). On a hunch, I re-configured my Gmail account & it perfectly worked!!
Today it's again back to "Packet filtered" & Gmail again is not working :(
Is my assumption right that my MTNL dialup is to be blamed? If so, what I can do to get this fixed? I mean is it possible to actually explain this to somebody in MTNL & get results? Their helpline is forever busy & nobody responds to the e-mails (I tried those routes with another problem).

Feeling amorous, she looked under the sheets and cried, "Oh, no, it's Microsoft!"

Same case here too.But when i used to ping other sites i used to get packet filtered. But i was able to access those sites. SOmtimes my thunderbird works with POP for gmail ,sometimes it doesn't .But SMTP always works inspite of getting "packet filtered."

Exactly. No problem surfing. No problem sending mails. Just that ping doesn't work. And so doesn't Gmail.
I guess the interpretation of "Packet filtered" is that some incoming packets were not allowed. Which means that if Gmail is sending something like some packets for confirmation etc., that is not getting responded so thunderbird hangs at "Connecting to pop.gmail.com..."
Wow, the ping is working again (may be till this session lasts):

It's quite sad that we are paying MTNL for a service which doesn't even let us access our mails consistently :(

Pakets filtered & ping not working cannot be the reason for gmail pop not working, as if you are able to surf the net, are you able to check your mail's on gmail using the browser if yes then there is no issue with mtnl.
most isp do not allow ping responses , [ICMP] is disabled due to security reasons.
this is what i can understand, incase someone can explain this better or dispute this.
this has been my observation while working with tcp/ip, it is possible gmail also has turned ping responses off.

whichever isp you use to connect, do you have a email address for the same, if you are able to connect to the pop3 server of the isp, try pinging, it will most probably not ping.
if smtp of gmail is working (someone wrote this) try pinging that also, this will be also not permitted, it is possible that the pop3 server of gmail is over loaded, or may be slow. i do not know what is the infrastructure of the pop3 service of gmail.
most probably this is a problem with speed, as pop3 takes much more bandwidth to download mails, browsing and downloading as well as smtp will work fine but pop3 will give problems when it comes to delay or speed issues.

I use MTNL. The e-mail address I use in this list is MTNL provided. The pop server is pop.mtnl.net.in & it is pinging (atleast now):
############################################## [/home/soumen] $ ping pop.mtnl.net.in PING pop.mtnl.net.in (202.159.228.8) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from smtp.mtnl.net.in (202.159.228.8): icmp_seq=0 ttl=250 time=139 ms 64 bytes from smtp.mtnl.net.in (202.159.228.8): icmp_seq=1 ttl=250 time=120 ms 64 bytes from smtp.mtnl.net.in (202.159.228.8): icmp_seq=2 ttl=250 time=128 ms 64 bytes from smtp.mtnl.net.in (202.159.228.8): icmp_seq=3 ttl=250 time=110 ms

Well, the pop & smtp servers are pinging alright: ############################################## [/home/soumen] $ ping smtp.gmail.com PING gmail-smtp.google.akadns.net (64.233.185.109) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from 64.233.185.109: icmp_seq=0 ttl=239 time=339 ms 64 bytes from 64.233.185.109: icmp_seq=1 ttl=239 time=339 ms
--- gmail-smtp.google.akadns.net ping statistics --- 3 packets transmitted, 2 received, 33% packet loss, time 7022ms rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 339.603/339.704/339.806/0.591 ms, pipe 2 [/home/soumen] $ ping pop.gmail.com PING gmail-pop.google.akadns.net (64.233.185.109) 56(84) bytes of data. 64 bytes from 64.233.185.109: icmp_seq=0 ttl=239 time=347 ms 64 bytes from 64.233.185.109: icmp_seq=1 ttl=239 time=339 ms 64 bytes from 64.233.185.109: icmp_seq=2 ttl=239 time=349 ms

most probably this is a problem with speed, as pop3 takes much more bandwidth to download mails, browsing and downloading as well as smtp will work fine but pop3 will give problems when it comes to delay or speed issues.
If it was just delay/speed, the correlation between ping & pop would not turn out to be 100%. When Gmail has worked, it has worked quite fast (almost as well as my MTNL pop) irrespective of the no. of mails. Or it hasn't worked at all.

MTNL is applying a moronic filter to its routers.
most isp do not allow ping responses , [ICMP] is disabled due to security reasons.
Moronic ISPs disable all ICMP. What security does blocking ICMP provide? <posting from a networking conference>

It's quite sad that we are paying MTNL for a service which doesn't even let us access our mails consistently :(
Many sites block the icmp packets for these may cause DOS(Denial of service). Also ping can be used as an effective tool to check the host system (if you actually sniff the packets you might get the information). I have noticed many ISP's have also started blocking ping and have got into content filtering,
For eg you cannot access explicit contents in UAE (be it porno or websites on hacking) even thru a DSL connection.
Best thing to know that the service you require is up or not is by doing a telnet on that port.
For eg if you want to know whether pop3 service is working then simply issue command
telnet "server IP/name" 110
If you get a response then things are fine.
If you find your connection consistently slow, then there could be something wrong with your last mile connection, Ensure that all the cables are properly punched into the system.
Regards,
Chirag

Forget accessing mails. MTNL does not allow one to send emails consistently. They have submitted their dialup ip address list to RBLS spamblock lists. I get failure deliveries from all around when i use my local mail server at home. Same is the case with other ISPs (read VSNL).

Wait. *They* have? Their *own* IPs?
Then again, current thinking seems to be that email sent directly from dynamic IPs is Eeevil.

No. Just that the probability of the sending host being a zombie machine is too high for it to be worth accepting email from hosts on dynamic IPs.
