I want to make a career in embedded sys.,Sys programming.. Will learning Perl help me in long terms . If yes which extension of perl should i learn.

dont think perl is suitable - prototype in python and write it in C. my 2 paise

Well learning PERL would always come in handy after all it's widely used for fast prototyping, gluing multiple languages and lot more. However yes like what Ken said, C is the de facto for embedded.
Check out www.cpan.org for the multitudes of modules and snippets available for perl.

IMHO perl scripting is a cool good skill in Linux domain and will not take more than 10-15 hours of work to get to _intermediate_ level. You may need appreciate PERL (or some other scripting skill) if you ever take up Testing - Emebedded domain included.
