Dear all,
am trying to install macromedia flash in ubuntu to be shared by firefox and opera. now having downloaded the package on the desktop, i cannot install it. I am getting the following error message:

Extract the tarball. Copy the .so and .xpt files to your browser's plugins directory, typically, /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins/ . Restart Firefox.

If you want a deb controlled package then search for "flash plugin" in your apt repositories with:
apt-cache search flash plugin
You should get a list of flash plugin packages available for ubuntu. In debian the macromedia flash plugin package is called "flashplugin-nonfree".
