I recently spoke to a sales rep of a linux based accounting app but saw it too was too binding. Maybe it's not their fault, maybe i never clearly expressed by specs.
I am looking for a platform independent accounting application, built around open source components. The linux based accounting App was not only NOT OS but also tied to a particular platform. No can do. theoretically i should be able to run it on Windows, FreeBSD, Xandros, RH9, FC3 (both client and server)
So... Maybe a webbased accounting app with a mysql/postgreSQL backend seems to be the only solution for now. and it should be openSource ofcourse. It's a bummer that a web based app would mean doing away with the function keys. (true? false?)
a) It seems that K.G. has a comprehensive open source accounting package out there, which could do with some testing, development and other help from the domain experts as well as technical folks. I am sure some of our CA linuxers can join in? as well as some technical folks? If there are others too developing their own open source apps and would like to pool in resources, maybe we should get together and see how history can be made?
any takers?
Question 2: Would this be the right forum for posting FreeBSD questions? am setting up a freeBSD box for some stress testing to compare performance with a RH9 box.

Not necessarily. I'm not sure if Javascript can use function keys, but if it can, then "false".
Why the tie with function keys anyway?
I've offered a couple of times to write a web-based thingy, but I need domain experts to advise.

One wonders why it hasn't taken off more. Maybe the domain experts on the list can shed some light?

I haven't seen a web based application capable of handling function keys. You would need the browser to pass those keys to the application.

Because keyboard shortcuts make life MUCH simpler. The same reason why the command line is much faster at manipulating text.

In that case other keys can be used. And Javascript can handle those. See 'access keys'.

The domain experts are too lazy and stuck in inertia. Now if we are starting on this project, I am on board (but I cant program) as Domain Expert :)
We have a choice of using AVSAP (not yet been able to load it on my laptop yet) or we can try to get Web-ERP or CK-ERP (both are very good) and modify them to Indian scenarios.
We are also trying out Compaire, but there seem to be some problem with database connection. Besides, Compaire only works on oracle, which I am not very happy about.
If we are starting on this project, who else will be ready to join up ?
Regards Saswata
Can someone post the link to the project in consideration here ? I know of a company that has a VB.NET http://VB.NET solution and is willing to outsource it. Its a working application and is being used today. Some things may ned to be modified, but does that fit the bill here ?

It is really an attractive proposal but the problem is in the .net platform...Will it fit in GNU/linux using mono?or rather should we looking to port it on open-source platform? That will reduce the requirement of consulting the domain experts discussed above.... Cheers, Niranjan

Hey, sorry. Just realized that I should have said "open source" instead of outsource. - Navneet

FreeBSD questions should be ok on this list. However, you might find the bsd-india mailing list more useful. http://www.sharma-home.net/mailman/listinfo/bsd-india
