i will try that and get back.

there is a command called alsa-setup or something like that. Currently i'm not on my system so cannot comment much but also check that alsa is built in the kernel.

This is very strange. I'd investigate(google) further on these lines. Could be a driver issue related to your particular hardware. Which audio-chipset/card do you have? Also, are you using ALSA or OSS drivers?

Apoorva , Did you tryu killing the enlightment sound demon [$killall -9 esd] , from what I know the debian systems have the esd and they cause this peoblem . Also could you try playing the a audio cd through the default player . If you can hear the sound , then is certainly a the esd . I had this issue with a good bit of boxes thats i installed ubuntu for home use .PLease let me know , I am curious it to know is this happens to all debian based systems .

Hey , I had a similar problem with the old Ubuntu . Try killing the enlightentment sound demon . It takes over the system sound [$killall -9 esd]. Let me know if it works .
