Hello All,
Today I tried out an experiment on a client's cablenet connection in windows. It was a pppoe connection with no static or dynamic ip assigned to the ethernet card, only a list of dns servers. By default the card was set to dhcp but since there was no dhcp server existing, the system would take time to search for a server before loading the full desktop. After a futile search, windows by default assigns a fake ip of 169.XXX.168.XXX and a mask of 255.255.0.0. The real ip, gateway is assigned by the pppoe. I set the system to static ip and gave the same fake ip and subnet. This solved the problem of the system hanging around for dhcp and the pppoe would then do its required job of enabling internet access.
The same trick could be tried out for linux based systems in similar cablenet situations so that they don't hang around for dhcp servers.
Regards,
Rony.
