Yes its been so from about 2 weeks. Any site stops responding randomly. Sometimes Yahoo or sometimes Google or sometimes MSN stops. Traceroute shows problems in routing. If you disconnect and reconnect 1-2 times, it picks up new route and site starts working.
I second that. I was using OpenDNS. Replaced their IPs with MTNL DNS IPs. But behavior continues.
I third that. And I guess,Rohit, you made a typo and actually meant that you replaced the MTNL DNS with OpenDNS IPs?? Also, for using OpenDNS,should we use the instructions for Linux/Unix or for routers since the desktop is basically a machine on the private network while the router is the one which handles DNS addresses?
Regards, Easwar PS:Has somebody experienced considerable improvement in performance after switching from MTNL DNS to OpenDNS?

No, that's correct. On getting Triband in March, I had immediately inserted OpenDNS IPs in /etc/network/resolv.conf. When this problem cropped up (last Friday or so), I replaced the OpenDNS with the MTNL IPs.

I have seen some improvements with openDNS, but some strangeness still continues. Even after gmail opens, going from inbox to another message shows "Looking up ..." in the status bar. Maybe I have to use Anurag's idea of a caching proxy server too, to overcome this silliness.
And this does _not_ help with the problem of lookup happening properly and pages opening very slowly.

A caching DNS proxy server ( bind or the likes ) wont help if there is a routing problem.

Right you are. What meant was the silly (CMIIW) name lookups e.g. looking up google.com when already signed into gmail. That might be fixed by a good caching nameserver (I hope).
<completely-drunken-idea-hic> Anyway, is there any way to specify a partial, known-good source route? Not strict routing... </completely-drunken-idea-hic>
