The link given above contains instructions for installing ubuntu *to* a pen drive. You want to install ubuntu *from* a pen drive. Refer to these instructions from the official ubuntu installation guide: https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/installation-guide/i386/boot-usb-files.html
BTW, I hope you have verified the checksum of the downloaded iso file.
BTW you could install from the windows partition itself ...
your friends in this one - 1. grub4dos 2. kernel image and intrd image from hd-media ( http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/hardy/main/installer-i386/current/ima... ) 3. And the alternate installer iso on the windows partition.
Just an alternate method that worked awesome for me.

No, that procedure is not for installing ubuntu virtually. Its for installing ubuntu by copying the installation files to a windows partition and creating a bootup option to start the installation on reboot. You can read the detailed procedure at: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromWindows Scroll down to the "The CD image approach" at the bottom of the page.
But first verify that your download was proper: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

whenever you download a large file, lookout for a file named md5sum.txt or other similar place where md5/sha1sum is listed. after the download is finished, run: $ md5sum big-file.iso and compare the value of md5 as mentioned on the site.

Or sometimes there's a digest file containing all of them.

hey thanks for all these info...i checked and my file was fine.... I made the live usb and tryed to install ...but i got this error
"[251.937226] Buffer I/O error on device fd0, logical block "
what does this means ....Is it because of my hard disk ? Or some other reason? the error comes every time when ever i try to use a ubuntu live cd / live usb. but when i tried gentoo it worked without giving any error. what is a cause.???

fd0 is the device for diskette in first floppy drive. is there an option to change the drive to usb flash? they are typically accessed from /dev/sdaX or similar device.
