Since we are on the topic, how ``decent" should the memory size be for say a 1 hour clip(with sound) at a 640x480 resolution?

depends on the compression codec and bitrate. But it would be approx 512kB /S at 4 Mb /s bitrate. <= 1.8GB for 60 min. One mini dvd. This is the data rate @ 25fps. Phone cameras barely manage 10 fps @ 16 bits so u should get a nice jerky pixelated movie in 1 GB.
