Plz mention how are u doing configuration.
I think Dlink doesn't have any problem on RH and SuSe. I am using Tata Indicom's FWT(Fixed Wireless) which has inbuilt modem and it is working.
typically u have to use following. Using kppp :
login as root. 1. Run kppp 2. click on configure button kppp configuration window will appear. 3. Go to account tab -> click on new 4. create new account window will appear. 5. select manual setup 6. add connection name and phone number(The number to which u want to dial) 7.click ok and return to account configuration window 8.click on device tab select modem device : /dev/ttyS0 if modem is connected to COM1 /dev/ttyS1 if modem is connected to COM2 select flow control: hardware select relevent modem speed and line termination. click ok and go to kppp window give username and passward.
u can also check whether connection is happening or not by clicking on query modem on modem tab of kppp configuration window.
Other way is wvdial :
login as root run follwing command
root# wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf it will scan ports and create wvdial.conf /etc directory.
edit wvdial.conf enter the loginID and passward
now run
root# wvdial
It should work.

as root run wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf - if the modem is not detected, check your connections
