Dear Linuxers, Hi after a long back,
I, also, want to contribute my efforts to some of the linux
projects. Before that I want to tell u few things about me.
I don't know much about the linux b'coz
I'm learning the linux by myself ( just by trial & error method ) & to be very honest to you I don't know much programing languages like, php, perl, java & many other, wht u ppl know & most probably will be working in. I just know html (in which my web site is), C ( wht I learned in my college )& little of C++ ( wht I'm learning by my self ). b'coz I always being interested in doing some real life projects but never get any chance.
Even I don't know the kernel compilation. But still I want to
work with u ppl (may be small part ) on some projects. B'coz I'm very much sure that, if I get a chance to work on some project, I can learn & can work with you.
P.S. I don't know wht u guys will think about me after reading this but, still I want to work on some of the projects with U. Here is a link to my resume which I think helpful to u ppl. http://www.geocities.com/s9sameer/resume.htm

languages ? Is there some VB like language in Linux ?
Why port a bad language to any other operating system. Still, if you're looking to run your VB programs under Gnome, have a look at GB (GnomeBasic)

should be. my point is, don't bring VB to linux.
No, I spoke of VB since I know how to program in it.
If there are better languages, tell me about it and where I can get a crash course in it

Try C. Programming in ANSI C - Kumar & Agrawal is an excellent book.

Hey, c'mon! That guy wants to know about a VHLL for Linux. You're only trying to discourage him from adopting Linux by this attitude.

And Visual Basic language per se is a VHLL ? Excuse me but I thought VB was famous as a RAD tool. In my previous mail on this thread I had mentioned GLADE as a interface builder. Which can be called (partly) as a RAD tool. But even GLADE write C/C++ code down under.
Of course then there is TCL/TK toolkit with which you can create 'apps' fast. But can it come under the VHLL tag? Does it have the speed, flexibility etc.etc. ?
I think Kylix is about the only thing similar to VB for Linux. But I an not sure if it is free.
If one wants a true VHLL under Linux then go for Lisp. CMUCL, Clisp, GCL etc.etc. :P
BTW however much you want _everybody_ to use Linux, diluting the quality and corrupting the attitude is not the way to go. Those are the things which make Linux great. Truly great.
cheers, quasi

Ok, try this. Think of a language other than VB - the first language that comes to mind is probably better - if it is COBOL, it's probably around the same level :> (but then, I love COBOL).
C is good, C++ is good, Java is good, Perl is good, LISP is excellent, but you probably want to do python.
http://www.python.org/ is your friend, as well as the installed docs for python. They have a tutorial titled learn python in an afternoon. I don't think you can crash faster than that. ;)

no, not part of standard installations - most would rather not know it exists. You should search freshmeat for it. In fact, search freshmeat for any software that you want to find.
