Maybe you should switch to non-linux stuff then? Command line is king though - irrespective.
"RTFM" or "just google" kind of responses do NOT help the person asking the question... reading such responses makes another 20 people unsure (for the fear of getting snubbed) if they should indeed ask a question... and if this keeps goin on.. this mailing list could soon be dead... there would just be a few "ultra-geeky" questions about iptables and kernel rebuilds... and no newbie/non-programmer would find anything useful here..
This does not help Linux to grow. If Linux was limited to uber-geeks writing c, perl and maybe assembly codes, we wouldnt have this list... lot of you would have never seen Linux.
In this case, the person asking the question has also done some research, and is asking a very valid question.
If you are tempted to write RTFM/Google to some query.. I'd suggest you don't respond at all.. If you cannot help, the next best thing to do is to "NOT offend"... and its not difficult..

What is offending in suggesting an alternative which is non-linux? Sorry to say, I disagree with your remarks and in fact find them offensive.

Excuse me, Mr. sensitive.
Do I need to remind you that you are saying this on a Linux ML ? How do you expect not to be flamed ? It is just like going to Department of Homeland Security and saying "Osama Bin Laden" rocks !!!

Your response was more like turning her down. If you can't do using the command-line then it can't be done... Is not the answer. Besides all you suggested was to use "non-linux stuff" which isn't a very usable response. Atleast the poster above you suggested to search "Icewalkers". And look what you did, you diverted the entire thread resulting in so many crap responses which are really of no use to the original poster (Komal).
"Rai, Vivek BGI UK", could you please set your mail client to wrap at 72?
Thanks.

All this time I thought Komal was a guy as I know a guy with the same name. My mails to him (her) were written with that assumption so if any of my earlier mails have offended her then I offer my appologies for the same.

Rony.

Chivalry eh? lol. I dont know whether Komal is a guy or a girl. Doesn't matter to me. But I am assuming Komal is a girl as Komal is inherently a feminine name :| If its otherwise then Komal, please let us know and my apologies.
Bye.

You are absolutely right Komal was girl but she undergone a sex change operation and now she is very much he. I believe that should rest all speculation about sex determination of Komal.

Komal

"RTFM" or "just google" kind of responses do NOT help the person
It helps more than anything else u may be able to ever tell him. U will do (or will have done ) precisely this to provide the answer. Teach a man to fish etc. etc.
asking the question... reading such responses makes another 20 people unsure (for the fear of getting snubbed) if they should indeed ask a question...

Hmm.. does not seem so since the last 5 yrs atleast. If any thing members seem to be growing. It also makes clear that newbie is doing himself a favour by using linux. Also along with the usual RTFM / Google response there will be someone answering the question - a fair balance imo.
If you are tempted to write RTFM/Google to some query.. I'd suggest you don't respond at all.. If you cannot help, the next best thing to do is to "NOT offend"... and its not difficult..
Agree with the 2nd but not the first. RTFM is the conerstone of the selfhelp edifice.
