But someone raised an interesting question. What if Tally were to shut shop (remember what your mother told you about "never say never"), and given that it's a proprietory Database, sure a lot of people will be bambooed to high heavens.
Aha. Tally refuses to support older versions, without paying for all the upgrades. So dont wait for Tally to shutdown to get screwed. You are already screwed.
The generic problem statement as I see consists of the following parts: a) Using a database that is not proprietory and tried and tested while being tinkerable..(mysql or postGres)
What ever gave you the idea that free and open databases are not tried and tested. Postgres (renamed firebird db ) and Mysql are perhaps tested more than all the others and on wildly varying load and hardware conditions, and the formerly closed databases Ingress, SAP, and many others are also available under the gpl.
b) An accounting system, maybe a clone of Tally. It's critical that it should be a clone, even if tally is not perfect. Else you'd have a lot of reluctant migrants.
It should only import data. I think most CAs are smart enough to see and learn a better alternative in a matter of hours. And all of them are sick to death of the windows disease.
Instead of asking if anyone is keen to take the initiative, let's say I am taking the intiative. Surely I am not the first one to think about this. But with some commitment and convergence of initiatives, it can be a feasible alternative.
I Just installed avsap. Why dont you. We can collectively rant at KG ;-).

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ When did THAT happen? Firebird is the Borland Interbase database, one version of which was GPLed.
