Hi Philip,
try removing the menu syntax from ur lilo.conf and un lilo -v again. i think that should do the work for you.

menu syntax? What's that? Anyway, I figured out that that screen was stored in /boot/message, so just commented out message= in lilo.conf

Is a driver available for the 82815E graphics controller on the 815E motherboard. Some distros work with this board. Does it use the frame buffer Does it work with X3.3.6. Any one using 8110E/815E please mail me the /etc/X11/XF86Config file. The intel website has no info on this for Linux. Had a bad night figuring out the hardware.

If you go to the enclosed URL
http://appsr.intel.com/scripts-df/Product_Filter.asp?ProductID=179
and click OK, it directs you to a download of a X server for the 815 graphics chip. The server bears a 810 label, leading me to suspect that the 810 and 815 have a common API. Check it out.
