hi, if you look at the discussion here: http://db.glug-bom.org/wiki/index.php/Broadband_Pacenet
you will find that this guy pacenetrules has broken the rule of three - that is he has deleted matter in the page three times in a row. I request the sysadmins to deactivate him and prevent him from editing pages. Please dont boot him - he will just reregister.

"Broadband Pacenet" is now a protected page. Any modifications to the page will not be possible until a WikiAdmin unlocks the page.

Amen to that. I'm planning to edit the article later. I believe changing the terminology from 'decrypting the password' to 'mangling the password' is a better idea.

i dont think this is the correct approach - all of us are prevented from contributing to that page because *one* person's misbehaviour. Lock him out - not the rest of us.

Maybe we can use ACLs like in Dokuwiki?

I can either lock the page or lock Pacenetrules out of mediawiki. Pick one.

lock him out. This rule of three is a well established rule followed in wikipedia - and whats good enough for wikipedia is good enough for us.

What's to prevent him from doing it as another user?

nothing - we have to keep booting until either he gets tired or we get tired. Eternal vigilance is the price of freedom

not entirely correct. This is only a rule in Wikipedia english. When Jimmy Wales was in Bangalore, he said that each community needs to figure out their own rules, and it's best to start with none but the most basic - ie, no personal attacks and profanity.

i havent said we need to import wikipedia rules in toto. In fact this is only the second rule we are discussing - and in this case, I find the wikipedia rule fits perfectly.
1. Boot Pacenetrules 2. Boot all users who don't populate their User pages within a day of registering. 3. Watch your articles - that what I do now. 4. Put up a rules page. 5. One rule is any edit should be backed up in the Discussion page - comments to edits in the discussion page should be used to determine if the attacker is breaking rules.

Why? This is daft. If a user doesn't have anything to say about himself, that's no reason to penalise him.
- One rule is any edit should be backed up in the Discussion page - comments
all edits have a summary field that you're supposed to update except for minor edits. discussion page is if you think the edit is doubtful or controvertial in nature.

Contact details. A lot of acrimony can be avoided by a civil private email.

user pages are mostly useless - i must have at least 50 user pages in wikis around the world. Never used even one of them
- Watch your articles - that what I do now.
yes
- Put up a rules page.
already there
