Distro RH6.2 (zoot i think) Mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /win results in unable to mount /dev/hda1 bad major or minor number
ls -l /dev/hda shows major as 3 and minor as 0 (3, 1 in case of hda1) which afaik is correct. This is a 17gb disk on a machine with bios which can read only 8 gb. Exceept for the above problem linux occupying the upper 8gb works happily. I wanted to move some stuff from the ext3 partitions on to the vfat partitions before installing woody.

I think this refers to the kernel or modules' version number, not the device number. At least, that's what the LUG concluded IIRC the last time this came up.
RH6.2 seems pretty broken about this -- every time this problem shows up on the LUG, it is always associated with RH6.2,
