FG's posts are definetly not spam
he sends the same post to practically every LUG in india - unsolicited.
That is why u have mailing lists - subscription means u are soliciting mail on the relevant area of interest.
I get 4 copies of each of his posts.
I suppose that is what will happen if u are subscribed to 4 lists. the poster has no control over who in the mailing lists receive the mail. But he does have control over the contents and should take care to keep things short.
Now, it looks like he has automated the process. This, in my opinion is spam
If the mail has no relevance to the list it is spam. I find the job postings (most of which have little to do with FLOSS) a lot more irritating, but afaik several do find it useful. Imho classifying FN's posts as spam is a little harsh.

to me, subscription means joining a community. I try to contribute what i know and ask about things i dont know. This is about sharing and growing together. If i wanted to read his posts, i would subscribe to his newsletter. I dont think this list is 'soliciting mail on the relevant area of interest'. If so the listadmin should subscribe to the umpteen relevant newletters on behalf of the list. I'm sure you would enjoy and appreciate that -:) Fred does not participate in the community - he sits at a distance and fires off his epistles at periodic intervals

from wikipedia:
A small but noticeable proportion of unsolicited bulk email is non-commercial; examples include political advocacy spam
