Did you save settings when exiting from make menuconfig?
Yes I did save it. But anyways, the kernel compiled well finally. Instead of make menuconfig, I chose make config and then it worked well. I guess when I used make menuconfig, the settings probably might have not saved though I saved it. Can't figure out why that happened?
Now with the new kernel compiled in, when I give startx, the screen just goes blank and I see disk access for few seconds and then everything halts. Do I have to tweak some settings for the X to run properly on the new kernel?
Thanks and best regards, Mayur Joshi

If you're using a kernel later than 2.4.5 or something, it will not run with X4.0.x. You will either have to get X4.1, or get the kernel drm patch for X4.0.x. The patch is available from kernel.org in the 2.4 kernel directory.
I posted a lengthy description of this problem about two months ago.

are you sure ? I have a pcqlinux install w/ the following:
[spavri@farzaan spavri]$ rpm -qa|grep XFree XFree86-xfs-4.0.3-5 XFree86-75dpi-fonts-4.0.3-5 XFree86-libs-4.0.3-5 XFree86-4.0.3-5 XFree86-100dpi-fonts-4.0.3-5 XFree86-tools-4.0.3-5 XFree86-xdm-4.0.3-5 XFree86-devel-4.0.3-5 XFree86-twm-4.0.3-5 [spavri@farzaan spavri]$ uname -mrs Linux 2.4.9 i586
as you can see the kernal is 2.4.9 and X is 4.0.3-5. I have not explicitly applied the drm patch you have mentioned (unless it comes with one of the kernel patches). No problems running X on my old Pentium 120 w/ 48m ram w/ a Cirrus Logic card. It's a bit slow but otherwise as I said, no problems.

Sharukh.
