Hello All,
The Jan 14th meet was held at five gardens from 4 pm to almost 7.30 pm. It was attended by 12 people and the concept of meeting in a public place like a garden had a good response. Dr. Nagarjun even suggested an idea of having a wireless access point network to make the gardens hot spots for people to come in the free open space with their laptops and do their work without any restriction of wires or walls.
The topics covered in the discussions were, faxing in Linux and later on we had a very interesting talk by Dr. Nagarjun on free software.
For the faxing solutions, Dr. Nagarjun, Anurag and Benoy spoke about their experiences with fax softwares and Hylafax was the clear choice for everyone. Then Dr. Nagarjun gave a very in depth talk on the Free Software Movement. He updated us on how the software patents bill would have killed software freedom in India and how it was withdrawn in the nick of time after a lot of interaction with the Govt. and political parties. He went on to tell us the difference between open source and free software and how open source did not necessarily mean free software. Please note that here free is freedom, not price. He has also suggested conducting a Linux installation workshop for hardware vendors in Mumbai so that they can get an actual hands on experience with linux. They can be invited to bring their own setup, without monitors, to the workshop and go back with a working linux system.
Overall it was a good meet and I am sure all those present share this view.
Regards,
Rony.

if you want them to respond and take your seriously, make them pay - the more the better. And they will pay if you convince them that they can earn with this new knowledge. Most ppl think of free=cheap=useless.

Isn't it typical *human* mentality?

i suggest making a brochure showing the huge amounts of money that can be made and are being made configuring clusters, farms, mail servers and whatnot - rope in a few of the lug members with strings of degrees after their names, or ceos of companies and offer a one/two day program to teach hardware ppl how to do all this. I dont know going rates in mumbai, but charge them enough so it hurts a bit. The money could be used to pay the speakers/trainers and defray the expenditure

Will not work. Most people will not configure clusters and mailservers everyday. Besides it is not easy to teach this. Most of these activities are not trivial and require specialised knowledge which is diffcult to impart in a few days. Musch of the knowledge comes through years of experience in these fields. Unleashing a group of experts on clueless h/w vendors is a really bad idea. They are hardware vendors and not cluster/farm consultants for a reason. They deal with h/w only. The target group could be a sysadmins/academic people (basically students/RA who maintain their internal college networks).
There are a number of conferences dedicated to these fields. An example of this is SANOG which is directed towards people who work in ISPs or USENIX and LISA which is directed towards people who do large scale and enterprise scale deployments or WWWcon ...etc . Also organising a conference/workshop is a lot more work than you imagine.

Possibly, but meeting on a saturday during office hours is not an option for many people. How about shifting back to the sunday menu.

No problem with that. Whatever the members decide.

We can try that. Maybe for the next meet, we'll have 3/4 laptops with wifi networking.
