Hi,
I need a wireless router for network setup at my home. Basically for internet connectivity for 2 laptops and my desktop and for occasional other extra devices with wifi capabilities if and when required.
Now what I want to know is - what would be good wifi router which could work across a 2 BHK flat and also work when the laptop/device is in an opposite flat, separated just by a passage and walls. The passage width is not more than couple of meters.
I am looking at this [1] model, any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Go for a Linksys. Netgear is notorious. I have recently bought a Linksys
Rangeplus wifi router that has two *internal* antennae. From the results I got, I believe it would be better to go for one with external antennae. My router supports 802.11/n, which should have a better range, but I don't have any capable devices. With 802.11/g, if I work across a closed door, signal strength goes to 'very poor' from 'good' at a distance of 30 feet, across one corner, but it could be that its placement in a corner is to blame.
There are some Linksys wireless access points with a good range, but you'll need to connect them to a router first. Are you tying it to an ADSL connection? In that case, better check if it is a Modem/Router.

My my. How did I see Netgear in your link? I must be working too hard, or too little.

If you are not planning to change the firmware, any router would do as GNU/Linux compatibility is not an issue. The Linksys one with 2 ext. antennas is very good for range but unfortunately now through the distributor channels, we get only the new model with internal antenna. Try looking for this model ( Ext. Ant.) at Croma or other big malls. Price should be within 3K.
For best range, you will have to place it in the center of your usage area so plan accordingly.

I have been using Netgear's WGR614 for almost 4 years now and would recommend that. Its rarely switched off. This router has given excellent performance. I have used it for upto 6 wifi systems / devices together. The router is placed in ground floor and provides wireless connectivity on the rooms in first floor also though sometimes the speed drops to as low as 1 Mbps.
I think you should be able to get it for about Rs. 1600 making it value for money. The rate quoted on the link given by you appears to be very high. A better guide to hardware prices in India would be the following web site:

This particular model supports 802.11 b/g standards similar to the Linksys product mentioned by you.

this is a shop in bangalore on mg road. however, from what i have inquired so far, none of the shops in any other city offer the same price. The prices are usually a few hundred / thousand rupees more for most products.
This shop does have good products at very competitive prices though. I built my last computer from this shop, highly recommended
YMMV though...
