IMHO, this may not be a very good scheme. The reason is that all the Windows workstations on the network have to have the entire OS and all the applications you erquire, installed on every machine. You only end up managing an extra (Linux) Server along with all those workstations. If you really need to have Windows workstations, you should rather hook up the computers together and make one of the machines run a WINS service.
{snip) i know brother that the scheme is not very good, but its not my lab. 200 more students work on them.. plus i am not the boss. the HOD wants it to be done that way and no one say "NO" to the HOD. its his way or the highway.. so we have to do it the way he told us to. windows workstations- linux server- remote login(telnet) and ftp server

Hi gurpreet...
I'm new to the thread or trevor's discussion..... But i want to ask certain questions ....
Are you doing this as ur final year BE project?
Are you doing it for learning something new or to PLEASE ur so called HOD ...??
becuz setting up servers and using the services (rather enabling the diff servers ex, samba, telnetd, ssh, ftp) is not a going to be very much learning process ...
clustering is what u mentioned in ur previous mail i recollect ... what exactely u gonna do in clustering ? for what purpose u going to use it? are u going to just do fail-overs and stuff .... or are you going write some programs for enabling data clustering? or add some values to available free clustering solutions?
looking at trevor's mail it seems he has given u some project for boot CD-ROMS ??? ....... that is a good option ....
however for securing good marks u can do whatever u want to do .... But try to learn ..... code urself ..... test urself .....
