Dear Linux group,
Linux has some inherent advantages as stability, cost less, and has hundreds of free software options. moreover no piracy issues. It is best when it comes to security and more or less immune to virus threats.
Following is the list of the Disappointments with linux as of today.. May be in future it (linux) will over come.
But it disappoints when it comes to deal with multimedia apps. It plays VCD but cant play DVD. Cant play OGG without using plugin. A/V chats clients are disappointing. Nero allows multi-session CD to burnt in windows which does not work in linux. Also unclosed multisession cd cant be read with out the CD writer in linux.
And finally the least does anyone has tested beside knoppix the other live CD of Suse 9.1 pro, MandrakeMove 9.2

It can play DVD's thank you.
Cant play OGG without using plugin.
No OS can play all arbitrary kinds of media without libraries. Plugins are a nice way of doing that. Windows too cannot play these without libraries. :-| Ever heard of the windows acm ?
A/V chats clients are disappointing.
Which one have you tried ? I use yodel sometimes and am quite happy with it thank you.

That is not GNU/Linux's problem. We can write multisession CD's through GNU/Linux too.
Windows does not run elf files...

Such an one is an impossibility.

Have you used mplayer by any chance yet ?? By itself it can play all the stuff you need. Also if you give it appropriate libraries it can also play rm, mov, etc... I bet Windows Media Player can't do that.

Which cd writing software do you use? I have been unable to configure my LG 52x32x52. Hey but I'm trying :) I use K3b .. very decent software for burning the cd's

This is an ideal scenario. But everyone is different. First decide what do you want from your OS, then choose the one. If you are not satisfied , choose another.... As for a start why not start using both Windows and Linux ? I've seen that it is frustrating at times when in your adrenaline rush , you remove Windows, install Linux and expect Linux just to be Windows. It certainly has a learning curve and once you get used to it you'll wonder how did you get on with your life without it :)

Actually, the problem with playing DVDs isn't technical, it's illegal. You cannot legally play DVDs on any player that is not officially approved by the MPAA. The MPAA does not like Free software because there's no licence restrictions. They can't force you not to view certain DVDs.
Currently software exists to watch DVDs on linux, but it won't be distributed by any distro based in the US because that could put them into legal bs.
If you really want it bad, start a campaign to kick the MPAA.

But one OS won't handle everything for everyone. A server cannot handle desktops well, and a multimedia box may not be suitable for office apps.
