please check if your /etc/resolv.conf file is empty it is supposed to contain the ip addresses of dns nameservers in the following format

nameserver <ip-addr> nameserver <ip-addr>

please provide the ip-addr of vsnl/mtnl dns nameservers (or any other isp that you are using). then try connecting to the net. hope that helps!
