2 K or so from the price we would otherwise pay, ofcourse with some innovative (but perfectly legal) billing even 4K. Possibly someone with regular corporate purchase will get even lower pricing that what I can negotiate. Then I will latch on to his order than mine :-)
I am buying one for a friend. The final decision is on Monday. The Aspire 1362 seems to be ok for his needs. Will keep u posted. Last week purchased an IBM T42 2372K1A for another friend. It comes with winxp "professional" preinstalled. A bit of work with QTparted and debian sarge was roaring. It lacks gprs / cdma connectivity hardware. So an external phone will have to be used. The GSM/CDMA PCMCIA cards are ridiculously priced (Rs.15K from tata). Any ideas?

Yes. I have asked them which paid distribution would work, or a BSD if needed (Windows not an option). They have not yet answered me on that.

So has someone actually got a working linux install up on one of these ? If so, I might be interested in buying one nmyself if we can shave off some price on a bulk purchase. I'm still thinking though :).
I've got some local dealer addresses from their website and will try to take alook at the actual piece before I actually make up my mind. I'm using a IBM 390X presently.

First, acer comes with a fully functional and paid RHEL 3 copy. The one I bought had 9 CDs. Second, I have already put Suse 9.2 Professional on 2 of the Acer Travelmate 290E laptops. It works without any problem. There is some problem with internal modems, you need to install slmodem. The problem with wifi is with drivers since the chip is acutally capable of working on restricted bands and US Government has prevented the company from releasing details of the chip needed for open source drivers. It is a temperory problem which will be solved in few months.

Is this an hint that some of things (eg wifi card if it is present) won't work until a *real* (read crappy) system is installed?

i personally think it is a hint to the dealer to suggest 'upgrading' to a pirated M$

Or the fact that the dealer does not know what linux is or perhaps he cant recorgnise linux even if it came out of the computer and slapped him :-)
I have used it and it works very well. In fact, Acer in India gives official RHEL 3 with one year support.
