you don't run the Windows version on linux using wine or any other emulator.
But you could if you were keen enough to get it working correct? Sure there will be lots of legalese, ifs and buts, but once you over those hurdles it should work ok. But the question is without support, would you take the chance of running a critical function such as accounting and considering the primary user demographic, simplicity is the key. (wow, am sounding like the Tally Tag line).
But someone raised an interesting question. What if Tally were to shut shop (remember what your mother told you about "never say never"), and given that it's a proprietory Database, sure a lot of people will be bambooed to high heavens.
So the bigger question, Whats the alternative?
The generic problem statement as I see consists of the following parts: a) Using a database that is not proprietory and tried and tested while being tinkerable..(mysql or postGres) b) An accounting system, maybe a clone of Tally. It's critical that it should be a clone, even if tally is not perfect. Else you'd have a lot of reluctant migrants. c) Platform Independent. I mean truly, without issues. I leave that as a FILL_IN_THE_BLANKS for folks to fight over. d)A strong community dedicated to giving out updates as sooner than Tally can say VATs up.
It's nothing against Tally or EX per se, they are doing what they gotta do. But if someone wants to be the Next Microsoft, Surely there is a vacuum in the "open space" waiting to be filled?
Instead of asking if anyone is keen to take the initiative, let's say I am taking the intiative. Surely I am not the first one to think about this. But with some commitment and convergence of initiatives, it can be a feasible alternative.
Yes, it may take 2 months or 2 yrs.. but at the end of the day, there'll be light?. or maybe that's the end of the tunnel. u decide.
