dhcp is not neccessary. U can disable dhcp and set a static ip (in the same subnet as the modems ip). The modems ip can be set to any suitable ip.

eg. Modem ethernet ip 192.168.2.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 Your box ethernet ip which connects to the modem 192.168.2.2 ~ 192.168.2.254 Modem ethernet ip 10.1.2.1 netmask 255.255.255.252 Your box ethernet ip which connects to the modem 10.1.31.2 ~ 10.1.31.3
