Hello!
We are a small group of open source enthusiasts, working on an open source Management Information System (MIS) for Micro-Finance Institutions (MFI).
From Wikipedia: Microfinance
Institutionshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microfinance_institution *Microfinance is the provision of financial services to low-income clients, including consumers and the self-employed, who traditionally lack access to banking and related services. * In simple words, MFIs provide financial services to poor people such as loans, insurance etc. MFIs are very operation intensive organizations and hence need fool-proof IT solutions. One critical piece of software needed for MFI operations is MIS which is the core of their business. This system takes care of a whole gamut of things for them. This includes banking software which takes care of loans & savings accounts. Apart from this they also need accounting, HR and reporting/BI etc.
This project is called Mostfit http://mostfit.in and it is available under MIT license on github http://github.com/piyushranjan/misfit. It is written in Ruby with Merb as the web framework, Datamapper as the ORM, RSpec for testing and Haml as the html templating language. Mostfit is also made available on a SAAS model to MFIs.
We are looking for two kickass hackers who are either competent in Ruby or are willing to learn the language . We are looking at experience levels of at least 2-3 years in software industry. This person should also be willing to put in considerable efforts to learn the domain problem and should not be averse of working in a start up environment.
Location is Mumbai and salaries would be comparable to market standards

Hello
I am not aware of this software. Could not find it online. There are two other open source alternative named Mifos and Octopus. We have a different USP i.e. ease of use and flexibility. By the most conservative estimates there are about 1000 MFIs in India alone. This number could well be in 10s of thousands world over. Most of these organizations have a different workflow and hence very diverse needs. I am sure there is a lot of need there for a good working MIS solution and one software ain't enough.

This is exactly the problem we are solving. MFI != Bank
MFIs have a very different hierarchy structure. Branch -> *Center *-> *Group * -> Client The two in bold are absent in banking software. MFIs are built around a social model in which a group of 4-10 people take sort of a joint liability for the timely repayment of loan. The reporting needs are also very different and collecting social data and tracking improvement is a very important goal.

It is. Specially when you are making a better wheel :)

I've been working on Hand-held terminals for MF institutions, chitfunds & NREGA for over a year now. Definitely some synergy can be established to provide a complete solution. Do contact me off list if you're interested
