hi ppl,
this is my first mail to the list.
I am a relatively newbie to linux. The problem is that i am using gnome as my desktop, which seems to have slowed down my system considerably.
Could anyone of u suggest me any other window manager, which would speedup the system, be simple and provide optional features.
Tried KDE but no performance improvement.
Although system upgradation would speedup .... but that's not a option.
Thanks,
Ashutosh.

XFCE4 is probably the best. IceWM too is good. Others look and feel a bit geeky IMO.

*i would suggest you try and cut down on the "eye candy" remove the animated everything... the show contents of window while dragging.. the window border styles... icons in the K menu and other stuff. No Arts sound server...
* use 2.6.0 its preety good for desktop interactivity. i am using 2.6.0 on a PII 350MHz and the bloat of redhat 9 run preety okay. with 2.6.0 and removing the above features.
* i am doing all this with KDE,
