These are the things that I tried :
I erased the MBR and then did a lilo -v in rescue mode. No luck although.
Tried installing grub instead of lilo
grub-install /dev/hda
No luck
- I erased the MBR and then re-installed WINDOWS in the same folder C:\WINNT
When you re-installed Windows, GRUB/LILO should have been overwritten by the NTLDR and you should have been able to boot Windows. Or atleast after that, GRUB should have been inaccessible.
What exactly happened after you reinstalled Windows in C:\WINNT?

I had read this in a magazine but not tried it out, that if windows is reloaded over a dual boot win-lin system then to get back the grub loader in linux, reload linux over the reloaded windows but avoid making any changes in the existing linux setup directories or files and from the programs to be loaded list, select none (deselect all). This will only reinstall the grub over the existing linux installation.

Just a clarification, reload linux 'after' the reloaded windows, not over it. Sorry about the grammer. The linux should be reloaded as if its a new installation but over the older linux installation without any changes or partitioning or format and deselecting any programs to be loaded.
