Guys,
Would like to get your suggestions and recommendations for reliable and cheap linux hosting solutions.
The site I am planning to host would not be a very high traffic site, moderate traffic. May be a couple of Gigs of data transfer per month (will have photo gallery), and will need around a Gig of disk space for the time being.

yikes - I had lost my password and password reset sent me 'admin' as my new password. And after changing it I get an email with my new password in plain text.
Hi Anand,
We can provide the same. Cheap and reliable ... odd combination though. :)
Thanks Richard

Hi,
You can do your research here : http://www.webhostingtalk.com
HostGator & DreamHost are the two major players with the most and the cheapest in the linux hosting market. With US Specific Servers.
I have hosted on both of them and found them both to be reliable.
It also depends on the geographic location of your target audience, for ex. US.Europe,Asia etc.
The hosting will all depend on which areas you want to target, usually hosting in the EU is cheaper than the US or Asia.
You can find lots of deals and user reviews on WHT (WebHostingTalk)

I would recommend being cautious while using HostGator. They have quirky policies, for example you cant have public image hosting. You can have personal photo albums but if they find you giving out accounts and allowing people to upload images or such content, they will shut you down. Also, if they get *any* legal notice against your website being hosted there ( I dont know why you may, but just in case ), then they'll pull the plug first, ask questions later!

From what I have read Dreamhost is pretty lenient in what you can host. Plus
you can get really far with the disk space and bandwidth. If you really want free speech, then http://nearlyfreespeech.net is perfect. As a plus, they provide a pay as you go plan.
Also, it would be better to go hunting for coupon codes before actually making a purchase. Webhostingtalk.com "hosting offers" also provide good deals (at least the stickies look like reliable people). You just may save a lot of money.

Real Sysadmins don't forget their passwords ;)

actually I hadn't forgotten it as I never knew it in the first place - it was set up by an employee who had since left - I finally got a reply from her, the password was in her diary - 'admin123', which is far superior to net4!
that said, I usually forget at least one password a week - mainly because ff is very unpredictable in remembering them for me.
Anybody have any experience with Hosting Farms? http://www.hostingfarms.com/
I have been considering moving my websites to their service. The feature/price ratio is quite good; e.g. the Rs. 299/mo. plan

Unlimited storage and bandwidth looks like a big lie. If you don't get stopped because of space usage, then most likely the resource usage (cpu or memory) will make them tell you to move. Another factor that may come in is them limiting the outgoing bandwidth rate.

Theres nothing like Unlimited B/W or Space. Always Carefully read the TOS and AUP for any Hosting Service. Also raise a ticket to get details on the server you will be hosted on so that you can ping and test them with a test IP and a file download link will help you determine downlloadd speeds. Also ask them about thier backup policies.Remember most of the so called reliable hosting providers have a reachable phone no. and live support 24x7.
Most of the times these so called Unlimited B/W Providers Throttle bandwidth.... so ask them on connectivity to you server like 10mbps / 100mbps etc.
Also checkout if the company is reliable and has been in operation, read reviews etc. Remember a Fly by Night operation by script kiddie somewhere can cost you loads of trouble like downtimes, lost backups, stolen data etc.
Hope that helps.
