Hey all,
Can anybody recommend me a good encrytion program - console based of course. I don't want any thing that uses a Public-Private key algorithm. I want something that doesn't use paranoid number crunching mechanisms to hide data. I am looking for something akin to the UNIX `crypt' of yesteryears!
I just need to encrypt some dirty stuff on my machine ;-))
Oh yes, I have a steganography program.
All replies are appreciated :-)

crypt is not reversible. If you want something reversible, try base64. Not encryption, just encoding, but becomes gibberish to the avg user. ROT13 is also decent. You can write your own code in any of 238 different languages.

List them ;) I know of assembly, C, C++, C--, C#, VB, VB script, Java, Javascript, Perl, Python, PHP, D, Ruby, BCPL, COBOL, Ada, Fortran, scheme, smalltalk, lisp, emacslisp, pascal, delphi, VJ++, shell. What else?

Check the acm archives. They have a list there somewhere. Anyway, among the popular ones that you've missed (though not all can do rot13) are JScript, VB.Net (different from VB), html (I can say hello world in that), dos shell, Foxpro (XBase actually), SQL, D2K, and more I can't think of now. There are also obscure ones like BrainF*ck, and less known, but well used ones like pike (used in Plan 9).

What is C--? Can you point me to the homepage or something?
Since you've included VBScript, there's PythonScript and maybe PerlScript (for ASP).
JSP, ASP, Lex may be considered languages (but...).
Javascript, Perl, Python, PHP, D, Ruby, BCPL, COBOL, Ada, Fortran, scheme, smalltalk, lisp, emacslisp, pascal, delphi,
Eiffel! Algol?
VJ++, shell. What else?
Sorry, VJ++ is NOT a language.
JScript, VB.Net (different from VB), html (I can say hello
You can also say hello world in WML and any other XML (this, if you pass it through the right XML processor). In VoiceXML you can literally 'say' hello world. ;)

Objective C.
What was the first programming language ever used?
Lady Ada Lovelace used punch cards for Babbage's analytical engine. What language was that? :)

Machine Code. Literally.

SpeedScript (a progress implementation of ASP using progress on any web server), and Progress itself - the database language.
JSP, ASP, Lex may be considered languages (but...).
vi macros also :), not to forget awk and sed.

Logo too.
VJ++, shell. What else?

lol. If it is, then, Cobol and Fortran each have different versions with large differences, also GW-Basic, Basica and QBasic are different. Not to mention RealBasic, TrueBasic and XBasic.
Objective C.
Snobol, CLOS, Objective Pascal, Hascal. Matlab and Mathematica also have significant amounts of programming, and may actually be able to do good encryption.

ocaml, occam, simula, prolog, algol, forth etc. etc. are a few others. q
