Hello All,
On 21st Oct MTNL has advertised in the Mumbai Mirror that all customers of new CDMA 2000 1X Garuda FW and Garuda Mobile can get unlimited internet usage for an additional tarrif of just Rs. 299 per month under all the existing tarrif plans. It is yet to be updated on their website.
So folks, the time is ripe for setting up that mobile wireless router in cars, taxis, buses for unlimited public internet usage without bothering about usage charges. The tiny motherboard discussed sometime back by others with integrated 266 MHz. processors and a simple external psu would be ideal for providing the tiny pc that dials through the MTNL phone and its ethernet output is given to the wireless router.
This is just an imaginary concept..... Remember that bike advt. where the double decker bus is converted into a home because everyone is using that brand of bike for transport? "Public ka naya transport". I was imagining a Linux bus like that. A double decker bus that is dedicated to linux awareness. The lower deck has a lab with linux machines for demo and testing. It also has a counter that sells/distributes linux cds of different distros. The upper deck is for conferences and meetings, even ILUG-BOM meets. The bus will have its own power generator and wireless cum wired internet and LAN. If a chemical loo can be squeezed in, it will be totally independent of surroundings and can be parked in any area. Such a bus can regularly visit schools and colleges as they have the target audience and the space to park. It can also visit housing colonies to promote linux among the people with Linux 'melas'. The body of the bus is painted with catchy slogans and information that a person can read fast and get some idea of linux.

Anything is possible :) However, if a double decker cannot pass under bridges on the highway, then the upper deck can be designed to be collapsible over a single decker bus.

Rony, do you seriously think this would be feasible? The collapsible bus deck, and the idea to actually sell this to BEST?

Sell it to the BEST? Why would they want to promote linux? BEST will only sell an old bus or better to buy it from the manufacturer. BTW collapsible railings are used by the BEST in their maintainence ladders to prevent the guy from toppling off from the top working space. It is mounted on those trucks that have the huge ladder. By collapsible deck, I was refering to the side rails and roof that collapses like a parallelogram or vertically up/down using a mechanism like the collapsible lift doors.

Rony.

That was a classroom bus. My idea is of a lab that conducts demos and installations and package trials, a counter that distributes cds, a conference room all in one bus. It is to promote linux not teach linux. A mobile exhibition cum workshop.

umm...have seen the performance? Will they offer lower tarrif if taken in bulk? IIRC MTNL garuda's data performance was very poor.
