Can anybody refer some good books on Shell and Perl scripting for beginners . I would be working on these languages days coming forward and hence wanted to get acquainted for the same .

For Perl, the Llama is a good place to start. Officially known as Learning Perl.
There are a few books on shell scripting, and they are almost all reasonably good.
