Whenever you have problems of booting from CDs, always cross check the same CD on other systems.

RAMDISK: Compressed image found at block 0 crc error VFS: Cannot open root device "<NULL>" or unknown-block (253,0) plese append a correct "root=" boot optiion kernel panic -not syncing: VFS : Unable to mount root fs on unknow-block (253,0)

The K/Ubuntu live CDs have a memory test option. Clean your RAM contacts with a *pencil* eraser. Don't use an ink eraser or else the gold plating will get rubbed out. Press the RAM in again with a perfect 'click' at both ends.
BTW, it does not matter if the hard disk is present or not in a CD boot, till you actually begin the installation to the disk. If live boot fails only in a particular system, it can be due to the motherboard not being GNU friendly.

1. You can use, memtest86+ package to check RAM status at boot time, package will show option in GRUB menu. Ubuntu has this package by default installed with official CD/DVD.
2. You can use Google for Hardware related fixes. Or call Rony on visit ;) Or this article I found,

Does the system have two RAM sticks? If yes, then try removing one of them. A SUSE user with a similar problem has found that technique to work: http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/redhat-fedora-linux-help/23810-fedora-insta...
Also, some user on the CentOS forum has reported that upgrading the BIOS works: http://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=7884

Very true. I had the same LFY experience this month too but within an hour I rushed back to my paperwala and got the magazine replaced. I thought they mended their ways but they still churn out defective media. Now that I got NU, I will no longer depend on them for distros.
